Workshops
Cattail Workshop
Who: Students ages 5 and up. Parents are also welcome.
What: Come and join Crystal Scheer, founder of Whatcom County’s own Free Range Learning Cooperative for a day of hands-on exploration of the marvelous cattail. Standing in a marshy cattail forest with towering stalks waving in the wind as a red-wing black bird trills its unique song is a breathtaking experience, but cattails also have a multitude of practical uses as well. For this workshop, students will harvest cattails to use in cooking and crafts. We will make up a big cattail stir-fry for lunch with cattail-on-the-cob and make cattail pickles to take home. We will use the bulrush stalks to make toys and mats- plus hats or sandals for older students. Students will also learn all about the traditional uses of the cattail by indigenous people and how the plant can be used medicinally.
When and Where: The workshop runs from 10-3pm and will be located at Crystal Scheer’s property about 15 minutes southeast from Alger off of Prairie Rd and close to highway 9. Workshops will take place the following Fridays: May 21st, 28th and June 4th and Memorial Day, May 31st
Cost: $25 per student, $10 for siblings. This fee includes lunch and materials.
Registration: To register, please email: crystalscheer@gmail.com and include the names and ages of participants, your phone number and which day you would like to attend, or if you are flexible.

The Magic of Nature Journaling: Writing, Sketching and Water-coloring
Who: Students Ages 9-adults (multi-generational!)
What: Join Crystal Scheer, experiential educator and founder of the Free Range Learning Cooperative for this inspiring workshop series. Nature journaling is a hobby and a craft that delicately and beautifully leads a soul into the rich experience of communing with nature on a profound and personal level. Students will develop a love for self-reflection and quiet focus while discovering a hobby that is easily integrated into daily life. Senses will naturally begin to expand to include the awareness of subtle fragrances, camouflaged creatures and other wonders. Students will also learn to tap into that still small voice of intuition.
